The chiefdom would have been founded around the 13th century by Fo Njonvoum coming from the Tikar plain. Bafoussam comes from fussep which means "people sitting on a wealth, a treasure". The Lobé is a coastal river which has its source in the Ntem massif in the center of the Campo Ma'an national park. The Lobé Falls are about 8 kilometers south of Kribi in the direction of Campo. The Lobé is characterized by a set of small arms which progress in small waterfalls over a distance of one kilometer before flowing directly into the ocean in several falls, the highest of which measures nearly 15 meters.
