Attend the Ngondo (traditional Sawa festival)

The Ngondo is an emblematic celebration of the coastal peoples of Cameroon, bringing together the Sawas communities of the Littoral, Center, South-West and South regions, in Douala. This traditional and ritual festival, which takes place from the first Sunday in November to the first Sunday in December, is of great cultural and spiritual importance for the Douala community and the Grand Sawas of the region. Ngondo is a true cultural antiquity, aiming to bring together coastal peoples once a year to celebrate a great mystical and cultural ritual. At the heart of this celebration are the senior leaders of the different cantons of the City of Douala and its Metropolis. The festivities begin very early at dawn, with the participation of Initiates who practice ancestor worship and commune with the protective spirits of water, called Mengu or Jengu in the Duala language. Until 1972, Ngondo was traditionally celebrated every July 12, in honor of Duala culture and civilization, as well as to commemorate the Cameroonian-Germanic treaty signed by the Duala kings and the German authorities. However, after the famous festival of July 12, 1972, Ngondo was banned by the Cameroonian authorities. But since then, it has undergone a remarkable revival and rebirth, and is now celebrated in the month of December, marking a true renovation of this ancestral tradition. Ngondo is much more than just a celebration; it is a moment of deep connection with the history, spirituality and culture of the coastal peoples of Cameroon. It is also an opportunity to strengthen community ties and pass on traditional values and teachings to future generations.
